Bob will explore the critical issue of sustainable DC and AC power management aboard cruising yachts without reliance on engines or generators. This seminar will focus on three principal considerations in balancing energy needs: energy production, energy storage and efficient energy consumption.  This will include a discussion on the amount of energy various loads might require. System designs will be demonstrated that allow for everyday luxuries supported by solar and wind energy.  The pros and cons of various battery technologies, alternator designs, solar array considerations, wind turbines mounting and charge regulation will also be considered.  Examples will be given of common system design flaws often found on new installations. The objective with this presentation is to give a solid overview of the basic considerations towards designing a reliable marine power management system.  The perspective gained from this seminar should provide a litmus test for any system being considered for offshore passage making.
