The marine VHF/FM radio is the primary safety communications tool on most boats. Modern Class D radios include Digital Selective Calling (DCS) that can make automated emergency calls as well as provide automated ship-to-ship calls to your boating friends. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a VHF-based location tool that broadcasts your vessel’s position and displays the positions of nearby vessels as well. It is a ‘game changer’ in the safety of coastal navigation and has some offshore uses as well.
This class will focus on the selection, installation, and operation of VHF radios and AIS as well as their proper operation. The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), proper etiquette, and licensing will be covered to make sure your radio installation is legal wherever you plan to cruise.
