When you sail over the horizon, away from riggers, sailmakers and diesel mechanics, the skills you bring with you need to be adequate to replace those resources you left behind. If you’re on a fiberglass boat, those skills should include basic fiberglass knowhow. In this class, we’ll discuss what composite fiberglass is and the different component types that make the magic happen, including resins, hardeners, fiberglass materials and thickeners. Then we’ll move on to proper mixing, understanding work times and correct application. The last portion of the class is a workshop demonstrating how to fill blisters, patch a hole, correctly “pot the deck”, and more. From this class you should take away the skills necessary for fiberglass work that is relatively common on a cruising boat.
